Recommendations

With a system as flawed as our EI system in Canada it is no wonder so many people are “falling off” the books and having to turn to either precarious work(many different part time jobs just to make ends meet) or social assistance just to survive.  This web presence was developed out of this major Canadian problem that seems to be the 800 pound gorilla in the room that know one wants to talk about.  Here we are changing that, we want to talk about it, we want change and in order to get what more Canadians need we ask that you support these recommendations of change to our current system.

  • Removal of the 2 week waiting time

Two weeks of waiting time is completely unnecessary at a time when unemployment is at its highest since the great depression.  Working people need more help than that and have paid their fair share towards the benefit, now it’s time they get paid back.

  • Eliminate the “Clawback”

The “Clawback” was just a cash grab and a way to erode the middle class in this country.  It’s simple economics, the more cash in workers pockets will continue to grow local economies, which in turn grows the national economy.  If workers have money to spend, we all win in the end.

  • Lower the qualification time to 360 hours no matter where you live

Why does a worker have to put in so many hours, in some cases upwards of 600 hours to qualify for benefits?  It makes no sense, at this time, when workers are most vulnerable, we must make it easier to collect not harder.

  • Lengthen the minimum time you can collect E.I. to 50 weeks

Currently some workers can only collect benefits for 26 weeks.  This is shameful, workers pay the premiums into this system and they should be able to collect them in their time of need.  Giving them a minimum of 50 weeks allows them the time they need to find gainful employment after which they will start paying into the system again.

  • Raise the benefit amount to 60% of your earnings based on your best 12 weeks of work

EI recipients currently receive only 55% of their gross pay.  This can be almost impossible to live on in this day and age, raising the benefit to 60%, granted a modest increase, can help immeasurably to the families that need it most.

When writing your MP or your local paper, be sure to mention these recommendations, they are needed now more than ever for the working class of this great country we call Canada.
